air you can sink your teeth into

So I was just browsing the local forecast over at weather.com – a favorite procrastination activity of mine, don’t ask – and noticed a truly disturbing severe weather alert.  No, it has nothing to do with floods or fire; rather, we are currently under an Air Stagnation Advisory:

"AIR QUALITY LEVELS IN OUTDOOR AIR ARE PREDICTED TO BE GREATER THAN AN
AIR QUALITY INDEX VALUE OF 100 FOR THE POLLUTANT OF OZONE. THE AIR
QUALITY INDEX…OR AQI…WAS CREATED AS AN EASY WAY TO CORRELATE LEVELS
OF DIFFERENT POLLUTANTS TO ONE SCALE. THE HIGHER THE AQI VALUE…THE
GREATER THE HEALTH CONCERN."

Wow.  And to think, I just spent the past 2 hours outside.  Think I’ll go apologize to my lungs and take a puff off the old inhaler.

Nothing doing — have you never seen one of these before? These were so common in the LA area when I was a kid that we used to have some summer days where summer school field activities were cancelled because we couldn’t go outdoors. And Dad says the air was way better than when he was a kid — he lived in LA for six months, and never knew there were any mountains nearby.

Um, yeah, in MA we got one of these a year, maybe… the idea of not being able to go outdoors because of the air is pretty foreign to a New Englander. And pretty scary, too.
